The University of Central Florida: A Leading Research University

Space informs our theme at The Celeste, as you might gather from our name alone. That final frontier also comes tightly woven into the story of UCF, established in part to train professionals for NASA’s space program. Orlando’s proximity to the Space Coast of central Florida’s Atlantic shore made it an ideal location for a research university, one of the country’s space-grant colleges.

UCF opened its doors (initially as Florida Technological University) in 1968. Now enrolling more than 70,000 students, it’s grown into Florida’s largest university, and ranks among the biggest in the U.S. “Reach for the Stars” is the institution’s apt motto, and the constellation Pegasus—the Winged Horse—forms its logo. UCF now offers 225 degree programs and awards close to 17,000 degrees each year.

Alongside undergraduate and graduate education and groundbreaking research, athletics are a major part of UCF. The UCF Knights include football, basketball, baseball, softball, tennis, soccer, track-and-field, and more, and boast quite the formidable collective record.
